Dark-fruited, savoury and a little brooding in the best way, this is English red with proper shape and energy. Think dark cherry and damson, with a leafy, forest-floor edge and tannins that are ripe but definitely present. The semi-carbonic lift keeps it lively, while the oak and fibreglass ageing add just enough polish without sanding off the wine’s crunch and character. 

Walgate is Ben Walgate’s project in Rye, built around slow, respectful winemaking and fruit sourced from some of the best growers in south-east England. The official site talks about marrying ancient and modern practices, and that tracks here, gentle handling, patient élevage, and a style that feels more about integrity and place than glossy winemaking tricks.
