Cristo del Humilladero, Gre2 Garnacha
Pale, fragrant and beautifully lifted, this is Garnacha with none of the usual heaviness. Wild strawberry and red cherry meet rosehip, orange peel and a little aromatic spice, with that granitic freshness giving the whole thing a lovely mineral snap. Medium-bodied, silky and vibrant, but still with enough depth and richness to remind you it’s proper old-school Garnacha rather than straight-up glou-glou.
Gre2 started as a collaboration between Les Caves de Pyrène and Ricardo Feech of the small Cristo del Humilladero co-operative in Cadalso de los Vidrios, at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos. Around 120 growers work vineyards here at 750 to 900 metres, where granite, cold winters and dramatic day-night temperature swings help give Garnacha freshness alongside all that Mediterranean ripeness. The aim is brilliantly simple, organically farmed fruit, minimal cellar interference, and serious value.
